Pharmacological properties

Xylometazoline is a sympathomimetic agent that acts on α-adrenergic receptors.

The drug causes a narrowing of the nasal blood vessels, reducing swelling of the nasal mucosa, sinuses, thereby improving nasal breathing with nasal congestion and sinuses.

The action of the drug begins a few minutes after use and lasts up to 12 hours.

When applied topically, the drug is practically not absorbed, the concentration of xylometazoline in the blood plasma is so small that it cannot be determined using modern analytical methods.

Indications

Symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion with colds, hay fever, allergic rhinitis, sinusitis. to facilitate the outflow of secretion in diseases of the sinuses. as an adjunct therapy for otitis media (to eliminate swelling of the mucous membrane). to facilitate rhinoscopy.

Application

Before administering the drug, the nasal cavity should be thoroughly cleaned.

Eucabal Drops and Eucabal Spray. Adults and children over the age of 12 2-3 times a day, 2-3 drops or 1 injection in each nasal passage. The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 10 consecutive days.

Eucabal drops for children. For children aged 2–5 years, the drug should be used under the supervision of adults, 1-2 drops in each nostril 1-2 times a day.

For children aged 6–11 years, the drug should be used under the supervision of adults, 2–4 drops in each nostril 2-3 times a day.

Do not use more than 3 times a day.

The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and should not exceed 7 consecutive days.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to any component of the drug, dry inflammation of the nasal mucosa (dry rhinitis), acute coronary diseases, hyperthyroidism, angle-closure glaucoma, transphenoid hypophysectomy and a history of exposure of the brain. concomitant treatment with MAO inhibitors and within 2 weeks after cessation of their use.

Side effects

From the immune system: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema, rash, itching.

From the nervous system: headache.

From the side of the organ of vision: transient visual impairment.

From the side of the heart: irregular or rapid heartbeat.

On the part of the respiratory system, chest and mediastinum: dryness or discomfort from the nasal mucosa, burning sensation.

From the digestive tract: nausea.

General disorders and reactions at the injection site: burning at the site of application.

special instructions

The drug eucabal drops and eucabal spray are not used in children under the age of 12 years; eucabal drops for children - do not use in children under the age of 2 years, use in children aged 2–11 years is recommended only under adult supervision. the drug should not be used for longer than 7-10 days in a row. prolonged treatment with the drug may cause the opposite effect. the drug should be prescribed with caution to patients in whom strong reactions occur when using adrenergic drugs, which manifest themselves in the form of insomnia, dizziness, tremor, arrhythmia, and increased hell.

Do not exceed the recommended dose of the drug, especially in the treatment of children and the elderly.

Caution is advised to prescribe the drug to patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, patients with diabetes mellitus, with thyroid gland diseases, with difficulty urinating.

Only one person can use each pack of drops / spray to avoid infection.

Use during pregnancy and lactation. The drug can not be used during pregnancy due to the vasoconstrictor effect.

There is no evidence of side effects in breast-fed infants.It is not known whether xylometazoline passes into breast milk, therefore, women who are breast-feeding should be careful. The drug can be used only when the expected benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the child, on the recommendation of a doctor.

Fertility. There are no adequate data on the effect of the drug on fertility. Since the systemic exposure of xylometazoline hydrochloride is very low, the likelihood of affecting fertility is extremely low.

Children. Eucabal Drops and Eucabal Spray should not be used to treat children under 12 years of age.

Eucabal drops for children are not used in children under the age of 2 years. The use of the drug in children aged 2-11 years is recommended only under the supervision of adults.

The ability to influence the reaction rate when driving vehicles or working with other mechanisms. Typically, the drug does not have or has a minimal effect on the ability to drive vehicles or work with mechanisms.

Interactions

Xylometazoline may affect the action of certain antihypertensive agents, such as β-adrenergic receptor blockers, and certain antidepressants, such as tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants.

Overdose

Significant overdose or accidental oral administration of the drug, especially in children, can cause hypoactivity, impaired vision, headache, agitation, heart rhythm disturbance, insomnia, respiratory depression, and sometimes loss of consciousness. prolonged use of the drug can lead to secondary rhinitis that is resistant to treatment.

The treatment is symptomatic.

Storage conditions

At a temperature not exceeding 25 ° c. after opening the bottle, the drug is suitable for use within 6 months.
