Pharmacological properties

Venitan®, gel, contains β-escin. escin is a natural mixture of triterpene saponins derived from horse chestnut seeds (aesculus hippocastanum l.), which have decongestant, venotonic, and anti-inflammatory activity. In addition, escin acts at the initial stage of the inflammatory process, which is associated with increased membrane and capillary permeability and the production of exudate in adjacent tissues.

Escin has an anti-serotonin and antihistamine effect.

Escin inhibits the activity of prostaglandinsynthetase. This enzyme is necessary for the formation of prostaglandins, which play an important role in the mechanism of inflammation.

Escin prevents the decrease in ATP content in endothelial cells and increases the activity of phospholipase A2, an enzyme that is responsible for the release of precursors of inflammatory mediators.

Escin reduces the activity of lysosomal enzymes that break down proteoglycans in the walls of capillaries. This increases the resistance of capillaries, reduces their permeability, thus reducing the amount of exudate and the formation of edema.

Venitan Forte®. Combined angioprotective agent for external use containing β-escin, an extract from horse chestnut seeds, and heparin, a direct-acting anticoagulant.

Heparin blocks thrombin biosynthesis, prevents the formation of fibrin from fibrinogen, has an antithrombotic, antiexudative and moderate anti-inflammatory effect when applied topically.

The drug helps to improve metabolism at the place of use, accelerates the epithelization of the skin with trophic ulcers of the lower leg, and is used externally as an emollient.

According to WHO recommendations, the level of detected Venitan Forte gel effectiveness can be classified as type Ib (level A).
