Pharmacological properties

the drug has antiseptic properties. active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms; has an antifungal effect. the effectiveness of the drug is due to the presence of two broad-spectrum antibacterial components that alleviate sore throat and reduce inflammation. Amylmethacresol destroys the structure of bacteria proteins, which provides a bactericidal effect. 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol exhibits a bacteriostatic effect due to dehydration of the bacterial cell.

Strepsils with honey and lemon: when combining both active substances in one drug, a synergism of antibacterial action is observed, which allows to reduce the doses required for the combination. In vitro studies have demonstrated the antibacterial activity of the drug against certain microorganisms that cause sore throats, such as Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenza and Moraxella catarrhalis, after 1 min of contact. A general decrease in oral bacterial load was also observed in one in vivo study. In vitro studies also showed the antiviral activity of amylmetacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol, as well as combinations of these substances with respect to enveloped viruses, including influenza A virus, parainfluenza virus, respiratory syncytial virus, cytomegalovirus and coronavirus, after 1-2 minutes contact.

The data obtained in clinical studies show that Strepsils lollipops with honey and lemon reduce sore throats, provide pain and swallowing pain relief, and the onset of the drug occurs after 5 minutes, and the effect lasts up to 2 hours. Compared with the use of lozenges without the content of active substances, it was also demonstrated with treatment lasting up to 3 days. One study also demonstrated that Strepsils lollipops with honey and lemon significantly reduced postoperative sore throat and hoarseness in voice 20 minutes and 24 hours after intubation. A study involving children (aged 6–16 years) with acute and recurring (recurrent) chronic sore throat showed a decrease in the severity of subjective and objective signs of sore throat after 3 days of treatment with Strepsils lozenges with honey and lemon.

Strepsils with honey and lemon contains lemon oil, peppermint oil and honey, the drug has a softening effect, relieves sore throat.

Strepsils with menthol and eucalyptus contains levomenthol and ekaliptovoe oil, which reduce swelling of the mucous membrane of the mouth and nasopharynx.

Orange-flavored Strepsils Vitamin C contains ascorbic acid, which compensates for the bodys increasing need for vitamin C during infectious and inflammatory diseases.

Original Strepsils contains star anise oil and peppermint, which relieve sore throat.

Pharmacokinetics Due to the insignificant absorption of the drug components in the blood, the drug is classified as a local agent. With this in mind, pharmacokinetic parameters were not determined. Strepsils with honey and lemon: dichlorobenzyl alcohol is metabolized in the liver to form hippuric acid, which is excreted in the urine. There are no data on the metabolism and excretion of amyl methacresol.

Indications

Original Strepsils, orange-flavored Strepsils with orange flavor, Strepsils with honey and lemon: symptomatic treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx.

Lemon flavored Strepsils without sugar: as an antiseptic to relieve sore throats.

Strepsils with menthol and eucalyptus: symptomatic treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx; the first symptoms of a cold, accompanied by sore throat and nasal congestion.

Application

For oromucous application. use the lowest effective dose necessary to alleviate symptoms for the shortest period of time. It is recommended to dissolve 1 lollipop every 2-3 hours for adults and children from the age of 6 years. Lollipop must be slowly resolved until completely dissolved. do not use more than 12 lozenges (8 lozenges - for Strepsils without sugar with lemon flavor) for 24 hours. If the severity of symptoms does not decrease or increases within 3 days, you should consult a doctor. strepsils with menthol and eucalyptus, sugar-free strepsils with lemon flavor: maximum recommended duration of use is 3 days. there is no need for dose adjustment in elderly patients.

Children. Given the dosage form of the drug, it is contraindicated for use in children under the age of 6 years.

Side effects

The following adverse reactions were observed with the short-term use of 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amyl methacresol in over-the-counter doses. in the treatment of chronic diseases and prolonged use, other adverse reactions may occur.

Adverse reactions are classified by organ systems and frequency. Strepsils without sugar, with lemon flavor: isomalt and liquid maltitol, which are part of the drug, can cause a mild laxative effect (after applying a few lozenges per day).

Do not exceed the indicated maximum dose. if the symptoms of the disease persist for more than 3 days, you must consult a doctor for additional correction of the treatment regimen.

Do not use in patients with rare hereditary fructose intolerance, with glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrose-isomaltose deficiency.

When prescribing the drug to patients with diabetes, it is necessary to take into account that 1 lollipop contains 2.6 g of sugar (except Strepsils without sugar with lemon flavor), and 1 Strepsils lollipop with vitamin C and orange flavor contains 1 g of glucose and 1.4 g of sucrose. Patients with diabetes should not take Strepsils with menthol and eucalyptus.

Original Strepsils and Strepsils with Vitamin C with orange flavor contain Ponso 4R (E124), which can cause an allergic reaction. Orange-flavored Strepsils Vitamin C contains the yellow sunset dye FCF (E110), which can also trigger an allergic reaction. Strepsils with vitamin C with orange flavor is used with caution in patients with thrombosis, a tendency to thrombosis, thrombophlebitis, severe kidney disease, urolithiasis, since the drug contains ascorbic acid.

Use during pregnancy and lactation.Data regarding the use of amylmethacresol and 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol are absent or limited. Safety when using the drug during pregnancy and lactation has not been established, but no risk is expected during these periods. Despite this, all medicines taken during pregnancy and lactation should be used with caution and, if necessary, consult a doctor.

Breastfeeding: It is not known whether amylmethacresol, 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol or metabolites pass into breast milk. The risk to newborns or breast-fed infants cannot be ruled out.
