Pharmacological properties

Pharmacodynamics

Mechanism of action. Benzidamine hydrochloride is an NSAID and pain medication. It is believed that its mechanism of action is associated with inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and, consequently, with a decrease in the severity of inflammation (such as pain, hyperemia, swelling, fever). Benzidamine hydrochloride also has a mild local analgesic effect.

Cetylpyridinium chloride is an antiseptic of the group of quaternary ammonium compounds. It acts as a cationic detergent. Quaternary ammonium compounds bind to the surface of bacterial cells, penetrate through it and bind to the cytoplasmic membrane of the microorganism. As a result of binding, the cytoplasmic membrane of microorganisms increases the permeability to low molecular weight ingredients, mainly potassium ions. Then quaternary ammonium compounds penetrate the cell, disrupting the functions of the cell and, thus, destroying it. Cetylpyridinium chloride has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity, as well as antifungal activity (for example, against Candida and Saccharomyces) and antiviral activity against certain enveloped viruses. The most pronounced is the bactericidal effect on gram-positive bacteria (in particular Staphylococcus). Gram-negative bacteria are moderately sensitive to cetylpyridinium chloride, and some strains of Pseudomonas are relatively insensitive.

Pharmacokinetics

Suction. Of the two active substances, only benzidamine is absorbed, therefore, pharmacokinetic interaction at the system level does not occur. The absorption of benzidamine through the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx is evidenced by a certain amount detected in the blood plasma, which is not sufficient to obtain a systemic effect.

Distribution. The volume of distribution of the drug in the form of lozenges and spray is the same.

It is excreted mainly in urine, mainly in the form of inactive metabolites. T½ and systemic clearance are similar in all dosage forms of the drug.

Indications

Symptomatic treatment for infections of the throat and oral cavity (pharyngitis, laryngitis, gingivitis, conditions before and after tooth extraction, etc.).

Application

Adults and children over the age of 12 years are recommended to use 3-4 candies per day by slow absorption in the oral cavity every 3–6 hours.

For elderly patients, the recommended dose is the dose for adults.

Children aged 6 to 12 years are recommended to use 3 lozenges per day by slow absorption in the oral cavity every 3–6 hours.

Do not exceed recommended doses. Septolete total can be used for 7 days.

Method of application Lollipop must be slowly absorbed in the mouth. To obtain the optimal effect, do not dissolve the lollipop immediately before or after brushing your teeth.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity to active substances or to any excipient. age to 6 years.

Side effects

Very often ≥1 / 10, often ≥1 / 100–1 / 10, infrequently ≥1 / 1000–1 / 100, rarely ≥1 / 10 000–1 / 1000, very rarely 1/10 000, unknown (cannot be estimated by available data).

Organ system Rarely Rarely Unknown
From the immune system Hypersensitivity reactions
On the part of the respiratory system Bronchospasm Laryngospasm
From the gastrointestinal tract Burning sensation in the mouth, dry mouth Oral irritation Loss of sensitivity in the oral mucosa
On the part of the skin and subcutaneous tissue Urticaria, photosensitivity

If any adverse reactions occur, discontinue treatment and consult a physician.

special instructions

Septolete total should not be used for more than 7 days. if there is no improvement within 3 days, consult a doctor.

Septolete total should not be used in combination with anionic compounds that are present in toothpastes (reduces the effectiveness of cetylpyridinium), therefore it is not recommended to dissolve the candy immediately before or after brushing your teeth.

It is not recommended to use in the presence of wounds in the mouth due to a delay in healing due to the action of cetylpyridinium chloride.

In severe infections accompanied by high body temperature, headache, vomiting, the patient should consult a doctor, especially in cases where the condition does not improve within 3 days.

If the patient has a chronic cough or hoarseness, consult a doctor.

Septolete total contains isomalt (E953). This medication should not be taken by individuals with rare hereditary
