Pharmacological properties
Phthalyl sulfathiazole (2- (para-phthalylaminobenzenesulfamido) thiazole) is a sulfanilamide preparation that has a bacteriostatic effect, the mechanism of which is due to a violation of the synthesis of microorganisms of their growth factors - folic and dihydrofolic acids. it is slowly absorbed from the digestive tract when ingested, the main amount of the drug is retained in the intestine, where the active (sulfonamide) part of the molecule is gradually cleaved. the thus obtained high concentration of the drug in the intestine, taking into account the specific bacteriostatic activity against the intestinal flora, determines the high efficiency of phthalyl sulfathiazole in intestinal infections. the drug is low toxic.
