Pharmacological properties
the active substance of this drug is phenol; in low concentrations (from 0.25 to 1.5%), its water-glycerin solution is used as a local antiseptic (bactericidal and antifungal effect) and a local anesthetic for treating the mucous membrane of the oral cavity and pharynx. glycerin has a softening effect on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity.
Pharmacokinetics Phenol, which is part of the drug, is absorbed and excreted by mucus, followed by excretion through the digestive tract. In case of an overdose, phenol is metabolized in the liver and excreted by the kidneys.
Indications
As an anesthetic and antiseptic:
- with infectious and inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and pharynx (tonsillitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis, gingivitis, periodontitis);
- after manipulations in the oral cavity and pharynx, dental operations;
- when using dentures or orthodontic appliances.
Application
Spray in the oral cavity and / or pharynx; fluid can be swallowed. when used in the oral cavity - hold in the mouth for 15 seconds, then remove. for children aged 2 to 12 years, spraying is carried out by pressing 3 times on the spray bottle. children from 12 years old and adults - by pressing 5 times. repeat spraying every 2–4 hours or as recommended by your doctor. the duration of use is determined by the clinical effect and tolerance of the drug. if the dose of phenol in the form of a spray is missed, and the patient uses it regularly, the drug can be used when the patient remembers this. in the case when the time is approaching the next dose, it is not recommended to use a double dose without consulting a doctor. the duration of treatment for uncomplicated tonsillitis should not exceed 7 days.
Contraindications
Increased individual sensitivity to the drug. impaired liver or kidney function. phenol in the form of a spray for the throat should not be used in patients with inflammation of the epiglottis, with inflammatory diseases with widespread lesions of the mucous membranes.
Side effects
From the immune system. allergic reactions.
On the part of the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Urticaria, pruritus, angioedema, rash. Possible reactions at the site of application, local swelling of the throat.
From the kidneys and urinary tract. Chromaturia (color of urine in dark brown or green).
special instructions
The spray is intended for short-term use. if the symptoms of the disease do not go away within 7 days, this may indicate the presence of organic pathology (abscess, neoplasm), which requires other treatment methods. a doctor’s consultation is necessary for 1–2 days in case of severe sore throat and / or symptoms such as fever, headache, rash, nausea, or vomiting. if the condition worsens, you should immediately consult a doctor.
The concentration of phenol in the drug is recognized as safe for toxicity or oncogenicity. Oracept® does not have a damaging effect on tooth enamel.
Use during pregnancy and lactation. Data on the use of phenol during pregnancy are absent or limited (less than 300 cases of treatment of pregnant women).
The research results do not indicate the presence of direct or indirect reproductive toxicity at the dosage of the drug according to the recommendations.

Lactation period
It is not known whether phenol is excreted in breast milk. Therefore, the risk to newborns / infants cannot be ruled out.

Interactions
The drug is prescribed in the complex treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity and throat along with sulfonamides, antibiotics, vitamins.
Without consulting a doctor, you should not use the drug simultaneously with medicines for the treatment of myasthenia gravis; drugs that inhibit the central nervous system; disinfectant solutions, which contain heavy metals; MAO inhibitors; neuromuscular blockers; opioids; vasoconstrictors.
Overdose
When administered, phenol causes damage to the mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, increased sweating, diarrhea. dizziness and weakness are possible. First, excitement can occur, after which comes a loss of consciousness. depression of central nervous system with depression of blood circulation and respiration is noted. in severe cases, the development of pulmonary edema, damage to the liver or kidneys, which leads to impaired function of these organs, is possible. a lethal outcome occurs due to respiratory failure, a lethal dose of 1-15 g of phenol taken orally. in case of an overdose, symptomatic treatment is recommended (gastric lavage, intake of activated carbon, if necessary - hospitalization in the toxicological department).
