An accidental or deliberate overdose after topical application of minoxidil will lead to an increase in the intensity of adverse dermatological reactions, especially itching, dry skin, irritation and eczema. Systemic absorption is also increased, which will increase the likelihood of systemic effects.
Accidental ingestion of a solution of minoxidil in the digestive tract can cause systemic effects due to the vasodilating effect of minoxidil. These can be cardiovascular disorders, accompanied by arterial hypotension, fluid retention, and tachycardia.
With tachycardia, beta-blockers are prescribed. Diuretics are used to correct fluid retention. Possible arterial hypotension is treated with the introduction of saline.
