Meropenem

Pharmacological properties

meropenem is a parenteral carbapenem antibiotic that is relatively stable to human dihydropeptidase-1 (dhp-1) and therefore does not require the addition of a dhp-1 inhibitor.

Meropenem has a bactericidal effect by introducing into the vital synthesis of the walls of a bacterial cell. The ease of penetration into the walls of a bacterial cell, a high level of resistance to the action of all serine β-lactamases, a pronounced affinity for penicillin-binding proteins explain the strong bactericidal effect of meropenem against a wide range of aerobic and anaerobic bacteria. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) are usually the same as minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC). For 76% of bacteria, the BMD: MIC ratio was ≤2.

Meropenem is stable in sensitivity tests, and these tests can be performed using conventional routine methods. In vitro tests show that meropenem acts synergistically with various antibiotics. As demonstrated in vitro and in vivo, meropenem has a postantibiotic effect.

Based on the pharmacokinetics and the ratio of clinical and microbiological results for the diameter of the zone and MIC (MIC) for microorganisms, a single set of criteria for sensitivity to meropenem is recommended.

The in vitro antibacterial spectrum of meropenem includes most clinically significant gram-positive and gram-negative, aerobic and anaerobic strains of bacteria, as described below.
