Pharmacological properties

An agent used for benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). finasteride is a synthetic 4-azosteroid compound, a specific inhibitor of 5-α-reductase, an intracellular prostate enzyme that converts testosterone to the more active androgen, dihydrotestosterone. finasteride reduces the content of this hormone in the blood and tissue of the prostate gland within 24 hours after ingestion. inhibits the stimulating effect of testosterone on prostate tissue growth. treatment with the drug can reduce the total number of urological symptoms due to BPH by 51%, achieve a steady decrease in prostate volume, increase the maximum urine flow rate and improve clinical symptoms. does not reduce the level of testosterone in the blood, which provides libido and sexual activity. with constant use, a statistically significant therapeutic effect is noted after 3 months. the severity of the therapeutic effect of the drug is maximum with a prostate volume of more than 55 cm3.

Application

Inside, without chewing, regardless of food intake, 1 tablet (5 mg) per day for 6 months or more.

Contraindications

Hypersensitivity, obstructive uropathy, prostate cancer. the drug is not indicated for women and children.

Side effects

The drug is well tolerated. in isolated cases, disorders of sexual function and a change in the ejaculate volume, impotence, enlargement and tenderness of the mammary glands, hypersensitivity reactions, including swelling of the lips, are possible. the incidence of sexual dysfunction decreases during treatment.

special instructions

Women of reproductive age and pregnant women should avoid contact with shredded or broken tablets due to the potential risk to the male fetus (impaired development of the genital organs). with a large volume of residual urine and / or a sharply reduced outflow of urine, the patient should be under the supervision of a doctor, since severe urination disorders may develop.

The effectiveness of the drug for prostate cancer has not been established, therefore, prior to and periodically during treatment it is necessary to conduct studies to exclude its presence.

Interactions

Currently, clinically significant drug interactions with other drugs have not been identified.

Overdose

Not described. with a single dose of the drug in a dose of up to 400 mg and repeated - up to 80 mg / day for 3 months, no side effects were noted.
