Overdose

Overdosing, especially in children, can lead to significant effects on the central nervous system, including cramping, coma, bradycardia, apnea and hypertension, arterial hypotension can change.

Symptoms of central nervous system stimulation include anxiety, agitation, hallucinations, and cramps.

Severe overdose will require treatment in a hospital. Since xylometazoline hydrochloride is rapidly absorbed, you should immediately take activated charcoal (absorbent), sodium sulfate (laxative) or resort to gastric lavage (at high doses). Reducing blood pressure can be achieved using non-selective alpha blockers. Vasoconstrictor drugs are contraindicated. If necessary, use antipyretic and anticonvulsants, as well as artificial respiration.

Side effects

  • From the nervous system: agitation, insomnia, increased fatigue, drowsiness, sedation, hallucinations (especially in children), headache.
  • From the cardiovascular system: systemic manifestations of the action of sympathomimetics, such as tachycardia, palpitations, increased blood pressure, arrhythmia.
  • On the part of the immune system: hypersensitivity reaction, including angioedema, rash, itching.
  • From the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue: cramps (especially in children).
  • On the part of the respiratory system, chest and mediastinum: discomfort on the part of the nasal mucosa (dryness, burning), increased swelling of the mucous membrane with a decrease in the effect of the drug (reactive hyperemia), nosebleeds, sneezing.
  • From the side of the organ of vision: transient visual impairment.
  • From the digestive tract: nausea.

Interaction

Concomitant use with tranylcypromine, MAO inhibitors, tri- or tetracyclic antidepressants or β-adrenergic receptors can lead to an increase in blood pressure due to the effect of these drugs on the cardiovascular system.

The simultaneous use of xylometazoline with other sympathomimetic drugs (e.g. with ephedrine, pseudoephedrine) through their combined action should be avoided.
