Castor oil is a laxative. When ingested in the small intestine, it is split by a lipase with the formation of ricinoleic acid, which causes irritation of the intestinal receptors and reflexively enhances its peristalsis.
The laxative effect, as a rule, develops 5-6 hours after taking the drug. After bowel movement, peristalsis is weakened.
When taking the drug, there is also a reflex contraction of the muscles of the uterus.
It is recommended to use for constipation of various origins, for poisoning (with the exception of intoxication with fat-soluble substances).
As a laxative, castor oil is taken before bedtime. Adults take 15 - ZO g; children from 1 to 5 years old - 5 g each (1 teaspoon), 5 to 10 years old - 10 g each (1 dessert spoon), over 10 years old - 15 g each.
When taking the drug, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can be observed. With prolonged use of the drug, intestinal atony may develop.
The drug is contraindicated in case of poisoning with fat-soluble chemical compounds (phosphorus, benzene, phenol, etc.), as well as anthelmintic fat-soluble agents; in acute inflammatory processes in the abdominal cavity (appendicitis, peritonitis, etc.); with peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum, with ulcerative colitis, during pregnancy; elderly people; with uterine bleeding; with cachexia. The drug is not prescribed for children under 1 year.
